So it begins

Introduction

Hello there!

Welcome to our game Cattitude! The game where you want to create (or prevent) as big of a mess as possible!

In this game you're playing together with 2-4 players where 1 of the players plays as the human and the others play as cats. The goal of the cats is to create as big of a mess as possible while the goal of the human is to get the apartment ready for his date coming over.

So. Who are we? We're a team of 5 people:

Watse D'haene: He is our sound guy! With his skills in music and sound design the feel of this game will be made even better!

Glenn Strooybants: Artist 1 of 3, He, together with the other artists, will make sure the look of this game is top-notch! Together with his skills in Environments and texturing we'll have really interesting levels!

Bjorn Clarysse: Artist 2 of 3. With Bjorn's skills in the making of 3D assets and making sure the unwraps are clean we'll have the best assets for the game!

Sarah Mohr: Artist 3 of 3. With Sarah's skills in 3D and character creation those characters will be looking crisp!

Pjotr Brunain: The programmer. This guy will make sure everything hangs together properly and make sure when you press a button something actually happens!

Research

What engine should we use?

I started this question by creating multiple projects in both Unity and Unreal. The first test was to see if our idea of making the view isometric was possible and if yes if it was hard to do.

I found that it was a bit cleaner looking in Unreal and it was easier to implement in Unreal as well.

Next it was time to tinker around with the physics. It was while looking up stuff about physics that i stumbled upon Unreal engine with Chaos Physics. This felt perfect for our situation! With easily breakable assets using the Chaos Physics we had a big part of our game already! To do the same in Unity would be way more work and with that question answered we made out decision.

Conclusion: We chose to use the Unreal Engine. to simulate the physics I will have to experiment some more to test out other plugins like Apex destruction.

Render pipeline

I looked a little bit into this. But more research is necessary since we went with the isometric view.

Art style

Next question was: What art style are we going for?

One of the first ideas thrown on the table is to go cartoony. This means going with slightly more rounded off props to give off a more friendly feel and warm saturated colors to keep spreading that warmth.

The floor will have darker and colder colors to give a nice contrast to the warm colors of the props!

Another idea thrown on the table that we also decided to use was to use Isometric view. With this view we make it all that little bit more cozy and cutesy!

What's next?

For next week there will be more testing and also working on a quick and dirty prototype!

Further fleshing out of the Art-bible will also be happening together with the creation of a Sound-bible!

Till next week!
